East meets West (summer 2022)

This summer, Jong Metropole is touring the Netherlands with a program in which music from the western music library merges with the music of Arab traditions, among others. After a week of rehearsals, the orchestra will tour the country in early August with three concerts at special (outdoor) venues.

Program and conductor

The young talents of Young Metropole are led by the Israelite conductor Tom Cohen. Although classically trained, Cohen is internationally recognized for merging musical styles from East and West, creating Levant Music - a new musical language.
Jong Metropole brings together conservatory talents from both the classical and jazz departments. This summer they are also joined by students of the world music department of Codarts Conservatory Rotterdam on ud, tar, zurna and duduk.

New composition Kika Sprangers

Saxophonist Kika Sprangers won the Rogier van Otterloo Award last year during her tour with Young Metropole. Therefore she wrote the piece Lamías, especially for Young Metropole 2022: an instrumental orchestral work inspired by a special encounter of Kika with a Greek fisherman. This piece will be premiered during East meets West.
