Ansgar Striepens has acquired an outstanding reputation, far beyond his home town of Cologne in Germany, as a bandleader, sideman, composer, arranger, conductor and educator in the field of European jazz music with roots in Afro-American and European music traditions.
He was a member of the Bob Brookmeyer "New Art Orchestra" and has released two big band albums and a quintet recording under his own name. Since 2005, he has been regularly engaged to arrange and conduct numerous, and in some cases award-winning, productions with the world-renowned WDR Big Band.
As a professor for jazz trombone, Striepens teaches at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, Germany. He has led the Youth Jazz Orchestra of Saxony-Anhalt since 1999, and in 2020, he succeeded Jiggs Whigham as artistic director of BuJazzO, the official youth jazz orchestra of Germany.
